Abstract:
Classification of soils, in particular active soils like clay, is a crucial part in civil engineering projects to determine the type of foundation used in the construction of a building. Current soil identification methods are time intensive, mostly inaccurate or very expensive. Inaccurate results can result in the wrong foundation type causing foundations to move and the building to crack and become unstable. By using an automated system implementing machine vision, more accurate results can be achieved and test durations can be decreased dramatically.
