Abstract:
In this paper, we will be looking at two works, Post Box Cinema & Temporal Chaos, which I have designed utilizing physical objects, the shadow as a metaphor and projected images. What we are interested in here is how current technology has enabled concepts originating in the expanded cinema movement into current artistic and museum practice. Using the two examples we will look at how such works are designed, the importance of conceptual metaphor in the work and how it is intended to interact with a given audience. We will explore the concepts behind such works within theoretical and historical perspectives. We will look at how moving images have moved away from the screen and how this relates to cinema and new media. What are the concepts from the first generation of what would become media artists and how has that developed into ideas of convergence theory? We will see how narrative and metaphor are used to transmit ideas in mediated physical spaces. This will include a look at historical precedents to the practice found in the two works discussed. In looking at these ideas we will see how these ideas have defined how we approach such works and practices that run counter to it.
