Comparison of the design of FIR and IIR filters for a given specification and removal of phase disto

Abstract:

In digital signal processing both Finite Impulse Response (FIR) and Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filters can be designed from a given specification. Both these design methods have their respective advantages and disadvantages. This paper takes a given specification to design both FIR and IIR filter. An input signal was passed through both these filters. The two designs were compared w.r.t circuit complexity, group delay, phase distortion and the output response. An equalizer was also designed to remove the phase distortion of the IIR filter. The results are summarized in the concluding section.
